Another way is to invite people to publish guest post on your blog. This is a good way to get quality and unique articles.

I really agree with your idea of submitting articles using either manual or software methods. Because I personally had experienced using both methods what I can say is this..If you are really serious about your online business you will need to invest for article submission software because it will really speed up you time and efforts to get more backlink.
With an automated solution you are spreading the same content over a wide area - which may have consequences for your page rank.
I write unique content for key high ranking sites, then distribute manually, then an automated solution for lesser those elsewhere.

submitting with software is great once you have signed up with each of the article directories
You really need to submit them to high PR ranking article sites to have better exposure and picked up by search engines or replicated by other blog user, etc.
