Becoming an Amazon Affiliate:
Get your own website or weblog. A good website or weblog is the starting point for becoming an Amazon affiliate. The next step is to create an Amazon.com account, or login if you already have one. You need to be registered on Amazon to become an Amazon affiliate. When you are logged in to Amazon.com, click on “Join Associates”. This can be found on the left side of the home page.
Fill out the form provided with all the information requested. Be sure to provide true information here too and submit the application. It usually takes Amazon 24 hours to respond to “Join Associates” requests, so sit and wait for the response.
Amazon will send you all necessary information regarding the status of your request. If your request was approved, they will send you links to place on your site so customers can order products from Amazon.
From Amazon's inventory, choose the books and materials you would like to offer for sale to visitors of your site. Send this information to Amazon, and place a link to Amazon.com on your site. They will send you reports and data on activities from your site periodically. You need to save these reports to keep track of your earnings.
Becoming an Amazon affiliate is as easy as that and does not cost you anything to register. Once you registered for one website or blog, you will be able to add the links to other websites you create without having to register again. When registering read all the contract terms and conditions carefully and make sure you agree with each of them before you proceed.

I have found that making money online with amazon is a little bit like other affiliate program.
With Amazon.com you will need other strategies than the usual one. Why is that? Because Amazon.com is a well known brand and online store, people will prefer to go to amazon.com directly than going to your site.
I am not saying there is no opportunity. On the contrary, one of my top earning is with amazon.com but you should know what strategies will make it work.
I agree with most of what you say Alan, but there is one thing I kind want to open up for those who are new. Yes it is easy to setup your website or blog with your amazon affiliate links and widgets, but you wont make money just because you have those things. When you set up your website, its only the beginning of your work. It takes real hard work and time to make money as an amazon affiliate or with any other method for that matter. You have to commit and work on SEO of your site, driving targeted traffic to it, link building, article marketing and all the rest. But, if you do put enough time and effort into it, it will be defiantly worth it. Just dont go into thinking you will make money the same day you set up your site and have your amazon links up. You will make money, but it will take some time and effort.

Yes, it's true. Amazon is one of the best website that you can join as an associate. As long as you are on the right marketing strategies, you can really make money online.
But the problem is, you're not going to make money by just becoming an affiliate.
It requires a lot of work. And what I like less about Amazon is the share. 4%? It's kind of confusing for that low rate...

Its much better to target small niches with less competition. I use amazon this way:
1- go to google products homepage for ideas to target.
2- choose a keyword and enter into google keyword tool
3- try to find a long tail keyword that is available as a domain name.
4- make an amazon based site using wordpress.
5- make sales from free search traffic.
I browse the internet today and found out that most of the blogs and websites have become an Amazon Affiliate. This is really cool!

Amazon Associates is really like any other affiliate program. You can absolutely make money with it but you need to follow the principles of doing so. Create content that people are interested in and then direct them towards products they may like.

Give it a try. The ideas is to get our reader to the Amazon.com doorstep by whatever means. Whether by links in our article, banner, widgets and etc. Then lets Amazon.com do the magic to convert the reader to buyer. One thing I learnead,before buying things, people do google the products to buy and not necessarily jump straight to Amazon.com website to buy.
